Before the Southern African Journey

Summer 2008

As spring turned to summer, violence erupted in the poor townships of South Africa. Xenophobia erupted into violent attacks on economic migrants from neighbouring Southern African countries.

Refugee camps sprung up around Cape Town where migrants could be more safely housed while the violence simmered down.

It was a bewildering time to be living in Cape Town, seeing wide-scale violence erupt into the open, something so rare to see living in Canada.

As we counted down the days until we departed for our grand Southern Africa journey, we took in some of the street life around Cape Town.

Art in the streets.
